Just stumbled across alex king’s 404 notifier plugin for WordPress. Whenever a user hits a 404 on your blog, this plugin will either email you or notify you via RSS. It shows the referring URL (very useful), if any, as well as the user’s browser agent (less useful).
Extremely handy, especially since I just upgraded to WordPress MU and doubtless left some links unfixed.
