Using the Scrollbar to Display InformationUsability Post

This is really cool. Greg from Raizlabs has pointed out that Google Chrome uses the scrollbar to show search results frequency. I haven’t noticed this before and it has really impressed me because it’s a very clever feature.

I’m honestly a bit up in the air on this feature. It’s not at all obvious to the average user what’s going on with the seemingly random highlighting in the sidebar – though maybe it doesn’t need to be obvious? This is either a great example of adding features for power users that don’t distract common users – or it’s a great example of adding crufty developer-esc features that will inevitably confuse common users.
